How to Improve Soil Quality

Soil is important when you are going to be growing plants and flowers. It needs to give the right nutrients in order to keep them alive and make them grow strong and healthy. If you have poor quality soil in your garden, this can be a real disappointment and you may want to do something to change it.

If you have just moved into a new home, often the soil and grass will be of very poor quality, following the house being a building site. Wait a while for everything to settle before you do anything drastic.

If your soil is poorly draining, you can dig trenches to help it drain better. You can then use gravel and pipes to create your own DIY drainage system. The other option is to plan delicate flowers and bulbs in pots instead.

Dig mulch and fertiliser into the soil on a regular basis and cover it over in winter. This will help improve quality over time.
